Independent Series – Food Porn

Recently I started considering the exercise3.1 Freeze and how I would go about shooting some images to reflect the artists mentioned I that brief.

As is normally the way as I started exploring the theme I brought together a couple of extra influences that got me on a path creating my own series with independent brief and execution.

I wanted to use images of liquids for the exercise, a fairly typical subject for the brief of freeze but also an easy one to manipulate in my own home and resources.

During the initial few shots I was reading about and artist called Stephanie Sarley, recently her work was plagiarised by Miles Cyrus and the fallout from this has been a hot topic on social media sites world wide.

The benefit for me was that I discovered her library of extensive work using fruit as a reference to sexuality and femininity. I obviously wouldn’t want to pass judgement or opinion on this topic but I do find her work fascinating to observe and the execution is so simple and effective it’s hard not to engage and appreciate.

This lead me to pursue the topic I’d discovered from a different point of view.

I wanted to use the same theme of food but from my male point of view, mixed with the opinion of some that sexuality is a taboo. Finally I wanted to remove the human element to highlight the absurdity of using food to represent sexuality.

Hopefully I have achieved the fairly ‘satirical’ look that I set out to capture.

‘In a world where sexuality is being reclaimed for women in a positive and empowering way is the male view still considered nothing more than an obsession with idealism and domination?’

All images were shot with a standard black back drop and single key light placed 45 degrees front left.

If I were to reshoot the ‘Sticky Fingers’ I would light from the right so I could flip the image so the hand appears from the top of the frame. I prefer the way that looks but the change in lighting is so obvious it doesn’t sit in the series as well. Potentially I could flip and reverse the image to achieve the same appearance of lighting whilst also getting the hand from above but I will have to test that before committing the change as I feel this would also change the composition.

I used a wooden mannequins hand to hold objects in f tame with the exception of ‘Surprise’ which needed a real hand to manipulate the squirting of the ketchup.
